As the standoff between Delhi University and its teachers’ association still looms large on the future of students who have enrolled themselves in the 13 science courses under the semester system, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday slammed both the warring parties for playing with the ‘life and career’ of students.

Justice Aruna Suresh asked the University and Delhi University Teacher’s Association to consult the students’ union to get their point of view on the introduction of semester system in the science courses.

“Today who is the sufferer? It is neither the University nor the teachers, but the larger interest of the students. Don’t play with the life and career of students,” the court said.

The court had earlier appointed a lawyer for mediation so a permanent solution could be arrived at. But it was informed of the failed attempt of any sort of mediation on Monday.

Pulling up DUTA for their reluctance to conduct classes, the court said, “How can you refuse to take classes and teach the syllabus? You on your own cannot decide that semester system is not good.”

Meanwhile, DU administration is firm on its stand as in a letter to principals of all the colleges, it directed them to organise teaching only in the semester mode. But for now, it seems the ball is in the students’ court, who must now come forward and clearly express their views and decide upon their own future.
