Students line up for the forms

Delhi’s student community saw the usual pre-admission rush as its premier central university announced the dates for the sale and submission of forms for different courses. The sale of the form began on 28 May 2010 and the colleges in Delhi University will accept submissions till 11 June. The first cut off list going to be displayed on June 22, though subsequent lists are expected until 6 July.

Soaring cut-offs baffle students

Those applying to the top colleges of north campus still have a fight ahead of them, judging by the high admission standards that have been maintained through recent years. 2009 saw the per cent requirement for commerce courses going well above the 90 mark in the most sought after institutions. Colleges like SRCC, Hansraj, LSR, KMC, Stephen’s and Hindu kept close to the 95% benchmark in courses like economics and B.Com (excluding Stephen’s, which does not offer this course). Students who had humanities as a stream in their 10+2 can hope for some relief over the commerce students, though most colleges would ask for mathematics to be included in their aggregate for economics (hons.). B.Sc courses crossed the 90 mark in most north campus colleges, but there is some relief for students opting for entrance tests.

The Girl Advantage

Some co educational colleges like Dyal Singh, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Zakir Hussain, KMC, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, and a few south campus evening colleges have in the prvious years, given an additional rebate to girls, in different humanities and commerce courses. It is expected that the options for girls will broaden in addition to the premier colleges like Miranda House, LSR, JMC.

Compartment students can still take admission

Students who have not managed to clear a subject in their boards will still have some hope, with provisional admissions if they meet the cut-off by including the minimum pass marks in the compartment subject, in their aggregate.

Quota queries

Students applying under the sports quota will get an allotment of marks depending on the level of participation and most colleges will also conduct trials for different sports. The dates for the trails are expected sometime around the first cut-off list.

Though individual selection dates would mean that a lot of the trial periods overlap, preventing the students from applying under all the college quotas. A similar problem has been raised in the past for students auditioning for debating, dramatics, and other co curricular activities.

Interactive courses in DU: the offbeat pick

The CATE, which included many of the high cut off colleges in DU, give the students a test of aptitude for English literature rather than a clear demarcation on board results. The journalism course, another such interactive programme,  is currently being offered in Kalindi, LSR, Maharaja Agarsen, DCAC (+interview), Bim Rao Ambedkar (course on social work), and will also give a chance to the students to show their aptitude for the subject.

CATE forms are available in 17 colleges of north and south campus, with test centres being distributed over 23 centres. This is an improvement over last year’s entrance, when most students rushed to the Faculty of arts for applications and only a handful of centres for the examination.

Keeping arts abreast

Humanities courses like philosophy and sociology have seen an increasing demand due to the expanding career prospects that these subjects afford. Besides research, sociology students can go into a wide range of counselling specialisations, developmental activities, mass communication and planning. the advantage of the philosophy course lies in the acclaimed faculty that students from St. Stephens and Hindu are studying under. It also allows students to choose from a variety of intellectually challenging subject and career options, a trend that has taken its course to catch up with the DU.

Academically dense subjects like History and Political Science have put no seemingly impossible admission requirements, and these are the options that students opt for if they are inclined towards research and academic work.
